The ASGP book series

The series of the "Federico Stella" Graduate School of Criminal Justice (ASGP) was created in 2019 with the aim of collecting and disseminating the fruits of the many projects and research activities to which the Graduate School contributes to give impetus, support and coordination.

The publications collected in the series range from monographic works to more practical volumes, from individual works to collective works. In order to guide the reader through the different typologies, the volumes proposed are marked as "studies" - for works of a more academic nature - or "research" - for works born from projects or more practice-oriented. A common trait of each volume in the series is, in addition to the link with study themes characterising the ASGP and with projects in which it plays an active part, the rigorous scientific method that must connote the conception and elaboration of each published work.

Rigour and scientific quality are guaranteed by the submission of individual works to an accurate system of double blind peer review, and by the evaluation of the editorial board, together with the careful supervision of the editors, in the case of collective volumes.

Law and Literature

From the experience of the Seminar Cycles on justice and literature, three volumes of the same title (Giustizia e letteratura I, II and III, Vita e Pensiero, Milan, 2012, 2014, 2016, edited by Gabrio Forti, Claudia Mazzucato and Arianna Visconti) have originated, starting the book series of the same name. The reader of these works is led by eminent writers, literary critics, and jurists along a fascinating itinerary that, going to the heart of important Italian and foreign narrative works, helps to reflect on essential problems of law, crime and responsibility. The openness to dialogue, the pleasure of high thinking and the 'sense of justice' of the conscious citizen, no less than of those who exercise a legal profession, are stimulated by the reading and interpretation of literary, musical, and cinematographic masterpieces.

As part of the series 'Justice and Literature', the section 'Themes' was inaugurated in 2018 at the publisher Vita e Pensiero. This name alludes not only to the monographic nature of these collective publications, but also to Themis, Homeric and Hesiodic deity of Divine Justice. The first volume of this series, edited by Gabrio Forti and Alessandro Provera, “La Grande Guerra. Storie parole di Giustizia” accompanies the reader on a journey of knowledge through the immense pain of the First World War. This first volume was followed in 2019 by “Miti e narrazioni della giustizia nel mondo Greco” (“Myths and narratives of Justice in the Greek world”) and in 2020 by “Il viaggio letterario della giustizia” (“The literary voyage of Justice”). In 2019 the section ‘Paths’ was also inaugurated, with the volume “Umanità in Trincea” by Gabrio Forti, Alessandro Provera and Biancamaria Spricigo, reflecting on (mostly forgotten or marginalized) “voices of Justice from a Great War without peace”.

Victims and Corporations

The "Victims and Corporations" project was coordinated by “Federico Stella”  Research Centre for Criminal Justice and Policy of the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (now Graduate School) and funded under the joint programme "Rights, Equality and Citizenship" and "Justice" 2014 of the European Commission (Directorate General Justice and Consumers). The project activities took place in three countries: Italy, Germany, and Belgium.

The project started in January 2016 and ended in December 2017 and included study and research activities (both theoretical and empirical) and dissemination activities and training sessions for law practitioners and other relevant actors, as well as the development of guidelines and good practices.

One of the main objectives of the project was to know and understand the experiences and needs of victims of crimes committed by corporations in the course of their business activities, which have resulted in damage to health, physical integrity or life. The project focused in particular on offences arising from violations of relevant laws in the fields of environmental protection, production and sale of drugs and medical devices, and food safety.

In order to effectively implement Directive 2012/29/EU, a set of guidelines have been drawn up during the project, also thanks to the direct participation of all stakeholders, aimed at all professional categories most directly involved in supporting and protecting victims.
